End of 2014 Silver Additions - Increasing the Silver Stack

We started 2014 with the goal of stacking and additional 100 ounces of silver by the end of 2014. We made a strong push in the closing months of 2014 in order to successfully accomplish this goal. In the above videos, you can see our recent silver purchases that we were able to add to our silver stack. We were able to diversify quite substantially with these purchases. We added the following silver coins and silver bars into our silver stack at the end of 2014:

4 1oz Australian Saltwater Crocodiles from the Perth Mint
10 1oz Australian Kookaburras from the Perth Mint

It was not easy to make these purchases, but we have been very dedicated to accomplishing our 100 ounce goal. Coin Roll Hunting Finds From Box #57 - Nickel Bullion Search Continues!

What do you do when you you are roughly 80 pounds away from your goal of obtaining 100 pounds of pre-1982 nickels? You get to work coin roll hunting through more boxes of course! Some quick math would reveal that we have a lot of work a head of us in terms of achieving our goal. By only acquiring close to 20 pounds of 99.9% nickel nickels in the first half of the year, that means we have to find 4x as much in the second half of the year. That will not be easy, so we will have to put in a lot of work and most likely adjust a few things a long the way in order to make it.

Fortunately, our efforts were rewarded with a pretty decent box this week. Our percentage of pre-1982 nickel bullion coins was back up around the 6% mark. If we can get that percentage each box for the rest of the year, that will make a large impact on our goal. However, we are still not doing the greatest at finding older coins, that is, Canadian nickels before 1963 or American nickels before 1960. We were only able to find 3 pre-1963 Canadian nickels, consisting of the years 1962 and 1961. While that is disappointing, we would still much rather be successful with the 99.9% nickel nickels than these older finds. With that in mind, lets take a look at the results from our 57th nickel box:

The challenge of the goal is actually making coin roll hunting a lot of fun. Nickel Coin Roll Hunting Finds From Box #44 - 1967 Centennial Rabbit Found!

Our search for Canadian 99.9% nickel nickels continues this week with our 44th $100 box of nickels. Readers of this blog know that these coins offer us a number of beneficial qualities, chiefly being a cheap way to protect ourselves from inflation within the current inflationary monetary and fiscal policies that are ongoing. In addition to this potential protection, since their metal value is higher than their 5 cent face value, there is also the potential to receive a small gain down the road. Of course, the future is unknown and there is no telling what can happen years from now. But the one thing that is constant is that I love this hobby! While the above is all just theoretical and hypothetical, the enjoyment and fun that we get from coin roll hunting is what continues to push us forward to the next box.

This week saw us find a coin that we have not come across in a very long time; a 1967 centennial rabbit. This was a very nice find as we have had difficulty in coming cross the rabbits from quite a while now. We had a lower number of the 99.9% nickel nickels this week, but still a decent haul. January 2014 Silver Purchase - Journey to 100 Ounces

As we have mentioned in a few of our previous posts, our silver stacking goal for 2014 is to try to stack 100 ounces by year's end. We are extremely dedicated to this goal and reaching it would signal to us that we worked very hard throughout the year in order to place a portion of our wealth into this amount of silver. To help us reach this goal, we have determined that dollar cost averaging through monthly purchases is the best method for us. In light of this, we made our first purchase of the year in January.

We decided to go with six 2014 1 ounce silver Somalian Elephants. We received a very good deal on them and were able to pick them up without having to pay for shipping (we bought in person). These are not our first 2014 silver Elephants. We already have two from a purchase that we made towards the end of last year. We are big fans of these coins, so it was nice to be able to add 6 more ounces of them to the silver stack, while at the same time kicking off our 2014 silver stacking journey to 100 ounces.

Nickel Coin Roll Hunting Finds From Box #43 - Best Nickel Box of the Year!

Boxes like our past week's nickel box is what makes coin roll hunting an amazing hobby. Our 43rd nickel box ended up being our best box of the year so far, and by a pretty large margin. Not only did we find a substantial amount of 99.9% nickel nickels, but we had an amazing 22 pre-1963 Canadian and American nickel, primarily from Canada. This box will certainly help us to hit our yearly goal of 100 pounds of nickel bullion. Let's take a look at the results from our 43rd box:

After setting our 2014 nickel coin roll hunting goal at 100 pounds, we have been making sure to start the year off right. We have a weekly order at a local bank for one $100 box of nickels. This has certainly helped our goal by ensuring that we get closer to it every week. Here are the results from box #39:

Silver Stacking Goals For 2014 - Journey to 100 Ounces

Although this blog strongly focuses on coin roll hunting, we have also been committed to purchasing silver over the last few years. We are purchasing silver (and hopefully some gold in the future) for many of the same reasons that we coin roll hunt. At the forefront, however, is to protect our wealth from the current monetary and fiscal policies that the world is embarking on, which we see as inflationary. Although there is no telling what could happen in the future, we see putting some money into silver as a responsible and positive action to take for ourselves.

In 2013, we had great results in adding to our silver stack. We were aided by the fact that we had set a goal, in September, of purchasing 1 ounce of silver every month for the remainder of the year. The primary reason that we are setting our our coin roll hunting and silver goals for 2014 is based on the success that doing so has provided us in the past. We ended up going over and above the goal and were able to add 24 total ounces of silver during 2013. Although this doesn't seem like a lot, and probably isn't compared to many of those who also stack silver, this was by far our most successful year and we were able to double our silver stack. We are going in the right direction and hope to keep the momentum going in 2014.

We have set a fairly bold (for us) silver goal for the upcoming year. We are going to try to add 100 ounces of silver in 2014. Like our 2014 coin roll hunting goal, we believe that it is both reasonable and realistic. However, it will take a little bit more work and sacrifice on our part to be successful, since it will be more difficult than adding 100 pounds of nickel bullion. That being said, we will have fun along the way and be sure to track the journey on our YouTube channel and on this blog.

Copper Penny Hoarding Results From Box #48

One of my favourite hobbies is coin roll hunting through rolls of pennies, nickels and dimes. For the past three years we have been going through $25 pennies boxes looking for Canadian pennies to add to our hoard. We were lucky to be able to go through another box yesterday in order to take advantage of the increased value of copper pennies.

Our 48th penny box was fairly up and down. There were eleven full rolls that had no pennies before 1997, meaning not a single copper penny. However, to make up for such a poor run of rolls, there were five rolls that were filled completely with copper pennies. In fact, two of the rolls were fortunately filled completely with pennies before 1980, which are Canada's best copper pennies to find. In the end, we ended up pretty close to our average and got a pretty decent result from this box. Here are the results from this box:

Awesome Coin Roll Hunting Results!

This was box a great box, with 15 King George VI pennies!

In our most recent box of Canadian penny box, we were extremely lucky to get quite a lot of King George VI pennies, from 1940 to 1952. We were also fortunate to find a 1933 King George V penny, which is an excellent numismatic coin! We have only found six King George V pennies in almost three years of coin roll hunting, so it is always exciting to pick one of these up.

It is also nice to get these older King George pennies because the pennies have been discontinued here in Canada, which should make their value increase in the future as their numbers thin due to many of them being destroyed (i.e. melted down) during the government's transition. Here are the result for this box:

With these results, we have completely caught up on the boxes we hoarded before the Canadian penny was discontinued in February. Therefore, all of the penny results in the future will be from our last 14 boxes. Hopefully, they will be as fruitful as this box was.

Canadian Copper Penny Results - Penny Box #35

Great to find a 1939 King George VI penny!

Coin roll hunting for Canadian copper pennies is one of my favourite hobbies. Unfortunately, pennies were discontinued in Canada this February. But my brother and I were able to hoard a few boxes before they were gone. These penny results are not from those final hoarded boxes, but are from a box I coin roll hunted back in January and wasn't able to produce the results for because I returned back to school. Here are the results:

Total King George VI pennies (4): 39, 44, 50, 51

Keeping the nice condition pennies before 1980.

We did not have any Wheat cents in this particular box, which is a bit unfortunate. There were seven 1982 American pennies that we will weigh to confirm which ones are copper and which ones are zinc. Finally, in this box there were really extremely nice coins, from 1960, 1962 and 1970 that were in great condition. With the demise of the Canadian pennies this year, we have decided to keep pennies that are in very nice condition when they are older than 1980.

Time to Start Coin Roll Hunting Again!

Our last remaining pennies to coin roll hunt!

It has been awhile since our last update, almost a year in fact, but we plan on providing many more updates in the coming months that track the results of our finds through coin roll hunting. We were fortunate enough to stockpile a number of penny boxes, consisting of over 32,500 pennies in total, so you can expect a number of penny box results. These should be particularly interesting since it is almost impossible to get additional pennies here in Canada since they were removed from circulation in February.

We will also continue coin roll hunting 99.9% nickels weekly, with the possibility of increasing the number of boxes we were doing from last summer since there will be no more pennies available to coin roll hunt. Hey guys, we have been busy coin roll hunting over the past couple of weekends. Having just gone over the totals, we can now give you a quick update on how we have been doing. Please note that last week we did not coin roll hunt through our regular two boxes of pennies since the bank did not have enough penny boxes to complete our order (not sure why the pennies were not there, we were just told that they "didn't have them," and this can happen from time to time). As you will see, however, this week the bank had our pennies and we sorted through our regular order. What We Found this Weekend from Coin Roll Hunting

This weekend we picked up our usual order of two boxes of Canadian pennies, a box of Canadian nickels, and a box of Canadian dimes to coin roll hunt. Altogether we had a fairly good week with our finds. Although it would have been nice to have found at least one dime, we'll definitely take what we got, and keep on search. Here are the results:

What We Coin Roll Hunt and How Often

We've been getting a few questions regarding what types and what denominations of coins we are currently coin roll hunting through, and how often. At this time, we are coin roll hunting on the weekend mostly. Usually this will take place on Saturdays. We have never had a problem finishing our sorting in a day or two, and generally re-roll the coins sometime during the week before bringing them back to the bank before the next search.

As for the types of coins that we coin roll hunt through, every week we order: (1) two boxes of Canadian pennies, (2) one box of Canadian nickels, (3) one box of Canadian dimes.

Right now we are happy with sorting through four boxes a week, but might look into increasing this total in the near future. Don't forget you can see the results of our weekly coin roll hunts on our result pages, and videos of these hunts can be found on our YouTube Channel.

Our First Dime Box

Yesterday, my brother and I received our first dime box. Like the penny and nickel boxes that we have searched through frequently, we were primarily looking for dimes that were worth more than their face value due to their metal content. In the case of dimes, however, this was an opportunity to find some silver!

Unfortunately, our first look at the rolls sunk our hopes for silver. They were all machine wrapped rolls, and in the past, machine wrapped rolls produced very few of the coins that we were looking for. The chances of finding a silver dime, we thought, were extremely low. I searched through five rolls and our initial thoughts turned our to be true. There was not a single dimes before the year 2000, meaning that they were all of the worthless steel variety. We decided to stop there since we were destroying the machine wrapped rolls and did not have any dime rolls in which to re-roll the coins and bring them back to the bank. However, we posted a video about the box on our YouTube Channel and our amazing subscribers informed us that we could reuse the machine wrapped rolls by carefully unfolding an end.

Now being able to at least reuse the rolls to bring them back to the bank, we completed searching through the rest of the box. These rolls were just like the first five and contained no dimes before the year 2000. The results did not deter or frustrate us, since we know the chances of finding silver coins in circulation today is low. Dime hunting is a volume game and we will continue to look through rolls of dimes in hopes of finding a silver dime.
