January 2014 Silver Purchase - Journey to 100 Ounces

As we have mentioned in a few of our previous posts, our silver stacking goal for 2014 is to try to stack 100 ounces by year's end. We are extremely dedicated to this goal and reaching it would signal to us that we worked very hard throughout the year in order to place a portion of our wealth into this amount of silver. To help us reach this goal, we have determined that dollar cost averaging through monthly purchases is the best method for us. In light of this, we made our first purchase of the year in January.

We decided to go with six 2014 1 ounce silver Somalian Elephants. We received a very good deal on them and were able to pick them up without having to pay for shipping (we bought in person). These are not our first 2014 silver Elephants. We already have two from a purchase that we made towards the end of last year. We are big fans of these coins, so it was nice to be able to add 6 more ounces of them to the silver stack, while at the same time kicking off our 2014 silver stacking journey to 100 ounces.

Hoarding Cupro-Nickels and 99.9% Nickel Dimes and Quarters?

Coin roll hunting is an extensive hobby, as there are many different ways to engage in the hobby and with many different coins that could be kept based on your own personal preferences and desires. For us, we look for coins that have a higher metal value than their face value currently or in the future, which generally includes compositions that include silver dimes and quarters, copper pennies and 99.9% nickel nickels. However, a question that we are asked frequently, and also discussed within the coin roll hunting community, is whether or not we hoard cupro-nickels and 99.9% nickel dimes and quarters.

The quick answer to both questions is not currently, but potentially in the future, for the cupro-nickels (i.e. nickels made from 75% copper and 25% nickel) and no for the 99.9% nickel dimes and quarters. In the video above, I go into greater detail why this is the case, but it has to do primarily whether or not we see value in these coins going forward. This is particularly true in light of the fact that we also see silver as a good place to put our money in order to protect our wealth within the current fiscal and monetary environment. Nickel Coin Roll Hunting Finds From Box #43 - Best Nickel Box of the Year!

Boxes like our past week's nickel box is what makes coin roll hunting an amazing hobby. Our 43rd nickel box ended up being our best box of the year so far, and by a pretty large margin. Not only did we find a substantial amount of 99.9% nickel nickels, but we had an amazing 22 pre-1963 Canadian and American nickel, primarily from Canada. This box will certainly help us to hit our yearly goal of 100 pounds of nickel bullion. Let's take a look at the results from our 43rd box:

Future of American Copper Penny and Nickel Hoarding Revisited

Coin roll hunters have to always be on the look out for the potential of governments to either change the composition of the coins that we value for their metal content, or even worse, eliminating a particular denomination altogether. The latter happened a year ago here in Canada in relation to the penny, and as a coin roll hunter it was pretty devastating. All of the goals and plans that my brother and I had made towards copper penny hoarding were instantly thrown out the window and there was nothing that we could do about it. Eventually, we reformulated our goals towards silver and nickel coin roll hunting, but it still is a hard truth to swallow even today.

For this reason, I have examined the topic of composition changes or discontinuations a number of times, particularly with regards to American pennies and nickels. In the video above, I look at a number of different articles and legislation that is currently on the table that affects coin roll hunting and provides a window into what could occur in the future. Nickel Coin Roll Hunting Finds From Box #42 - Canadian Wartime Nickel Streak Continues!

This was a fun box to coin roll hunt through! We have been lucky to have had some great success in finding older, more rare coins in our most recent nickel boxes, namely pre-1963 Canadian and American nickels. Our streak was extended with this box, and we did great on the Canadian wartime nickels from the years 1944 and 1945. Although they are not made of silver like the American war nickels, these coins were actually made from chrome-plated steel rather than nickel and they standout from the other years. Additionally, their age gives them a nice premium, which while not exceptionally large, is still an exciting reward for coin roll hunters. Let's take a look at the results from our 42nd nickel box:

Although we would have liked to have found a few more of the 99.9% nickel nickels in this box, we are fully accepting of the fact that it will not be often that we get close to our older average of 10%. If we can continue to stay above 5% each box, we will be well on our way to our 100 pound goal for 2014.

Importance of a Bank Order at the Bank for Coin Roll Hunting

We have tried to make our 100 pounds of 99.9% nickel nickels goal for 2014 a focal point of this blog recently. This primarily because is helps to reinforce the goal for ourselves and also keeps us motivated to continue towards the next box. However, we thought that we would do a video that focuses on a key aspect to our 2014 coin roll hunting goal, namely, the importance of having a coin order at the bank when trying to coin roll hunt. Having an ongoing order at the bank has helped us significantly and I don't know if we would be able to get to our 100 pound goal without it. Nickel Coin Roll Hunting Finds From Box #41

Readers who are currently keeping up with this blog will now that we love coin roll hunting and finding coins that have a greater metal value than their face value. We keep these coins as a way to protect our wealth in the current inflationary monetary and fiscal environment and because there may be an opportunity for their value to go even higher in the future. However, all this aside, it is just a great hobby that we both enjoy immensely.

As we have mentioned, we have set a lofty goal for ourselves in terms of nickel coin roll hunting by trying to accumulate 100 pounds of 99.9% nickel nickels in 2014. This will require hard work and persistence on our parts, but we are very excited as each box gets us closer to our goal. Let's take a look at the results from of our 41st nickel box:

This was a great box of nickels for us, as we were able to bump up the percentage of pure nickel bullion coins quite substantially from our previous box. If we could continue to hit the 6-8% mark on each box, that would assist us with our goal going forward. It was also nice to find so many older nickels. We have been very lucky recently to find so many pre-1963 Canadian and American nickels. Looking for these older coins makes coin roll hunting even more exciting and it is nice to be rewarded with boxes like this.

Nickel Coin Roll Hunting Finds From Box #40

What a great hobby coin roll hunting is! It allows us to accumulate circulated coins that are worth significantly more in their metal value than their face value, yet only pay the face value price for them. While it is no get rich quick scheme (or low for that matter), it is certainly a wonderful hobby that offers us the ability to seek a potential profit down the road, acquire an asset with a good chance of keeping pace with inflation and having a lot of fun along the way.

We are continuing to push towards our 100 pounds of 99.9% nickel bullion for the year by coin roll hunting through our 40th $100 nickel box. Although it is still too early to say definitely, we are confident that our current pace will be sufficient to reach this goal. Here are the results from this week's box:

We are very happy with the amount of older Canadian coins that we have been finding recently. The majority of the pre-1963 Canadian coins that we are finding are the 12-sided variety that standout from the rest. 2009D American Nickel Found Coin Roll Hunting

One of the many benefits of coin roll hunting is not only finding coins that are more valuable for their metal value than their face value, but also includes finding more rare coins that could potentially fetch a nice premium. Not all of these types of coins need to be minted decades ago. In fact, we recently came across a rare coin that was minted only five years ago. Although by no means is the 2009D a extremely rare numismatic coin, it's low mintage does make it a particularly sought after and difficult to find coin for coin roll hunting hobbyists. For this reason, we were very happy to find our first 2009D American nickel, which we can now add to the 2009P that we found almost two years ago!

Copper Penny Hoarding Before Silver Stacking? - Part 1 and Part 2

Although we are extremely passionate and strong advocates for the amazing hobby of coin roll hunting, we certainly understand that it is not for everyone. Similarly, depending where an individual is in their life, it may not be necessary outside of the excitement and entertainment that coin roll hunting brings. However, for us, as individuals in university with very little available money at the time (we're talking about less than $50 a month!), coin roll hunting was an extremely helpful hobby for us. When we could not afford to purchase silver and gold, coin roll hunting for copper pennies and 99.9% nickel nickels provided us with the means and flexibility to put the knowledge that we had been acquiring for the previous four years into action

The above two videos outline four of the primary reasons why we starting coin roll hunting, and more specifically hoarding copper pennies, before we started stacking silver. Those four reasons, simply, are: the built in floor of one cent, the ability to save on transaction costs, the fact that we could do as little or as much as we wanted and the ability to stop sitting on the sidelines and start accumulating assets that would benefit us within the current inflationary monetary and fiscal policy.

I could go into more detail on each one of these areas here, but it would probably be more beneficial to hear them in the videos above. Once again, I hope that these videos are not interpreted as making an argument for coin roll hunting in place of silver stacking. After setting our 2014 nickel coin roll hunting goal at 100 pounds, we have been making sure to start the year off right. We have a weekly order at a local bank for one $100 box of nickels. This has certainly helped our goal by ensuring that we get closer to it every week. Here are the results from box #39:

Entire Silver Stack - January 2014 Update

Now that we have posted our 2014 silver stacking goals, we thought that it would be a good idea to update our entire silver stack and show where we are starting from. We currently have 34 ounces of silver, with most of it being added during 2013. As you can probably tell, we are trying to get a wide variety of products, including generic bars, silver dimes and coins. The entire 34 ounces consists of either one ounce coins or bars, so we look forward to adding a few more denominations along the way, such as two ounce coins and ten ounce bars.

We hope that this video will help us to stay motivated through the entire year and serves as a good indication of not only where we started, but also what hard work, dedication and some fun can build. I look forward to coming back to this video at the end of the year and compare it to where we are at that time. Hopefully, it will serve as a positive image that indicates our efforts throughout the year.

What Is Your Silver Endgame?

The start of a new year usually brings with it the desire to either change mistakes or unsuccessful strategies made in the past, or to revisit reasons and goals that have been made to provoke original motivations. The new year has made my brother and I engage in many of these actions. We set out our coin roll hunting goals and silver stacking goals for 2014, given the success that goal-setting has provided in the past. However, we have also been reviewing the reasons for why we began to embark on going through coins, looking for ones that are worth more than their face value die to their metal composition, as well as purchase silver. During this review we have discussed what our silver endgame is; more specifically, to what ends are we working towards and when will we ever part with what we have been collecting?

The fact that we have been coin roll hunting and silver stacking in order to protect our wealth from the inflationary monetary and fiscal policies being followed today plays a very important role in answering this question for myself. Due to this ultimate goal and strategy, we are not focusing on a time specific endgame in regards to our silver and copper pennies. By time specific, I mean that I do not have a specific time frame, ounce accumulation over a specific time period or price target that would cause me to sell. For example, I am not firmly committed to holding my silver until retirement, which is likely to be 30 years down the road. It may be the case that this occurs, and it will made sense to hold throughout my entire life, but I am not entrenched on this position.

Rather, my endgame is focused more on the events that are occurring, namely, any events that show a move away from an inflationary driven-policy or where silver keeps its value in relation to the dollar to the point where it becomes an overvalued asset. Of course, there is no way for me to predict when any of this will happen. Also, there is no one specific event that would trigger me to sell. For example, a full reduction in quantitative easing by the Federal Reserve, while a move towards a tighter monetary policy, would not be a sufficient condition for me to get out of precious metals, copper pennies or 99.9% nickel nickels, particularly when interest rates are still artificially suppressed near zero. But I am prepared for the possibility that when events dictate that precious metals are overvalued, or where I can move into a wealth generating asset from the purely wealth protecting asset of precious metals.

This being said, I do not think that these events are imminent and I am currently focused on accumulation at this point. This is more of a discussion point for my brother and I am this point and we are very flexible going forward. Silver Stacking Goals For 2014 - Journey to 100 Ounces

Although this blog strongly focuses on coin roll hunting, we have also been committed to purchasing silver over the last few years. We are purchasing silver (and hopefully some gold in the future) for many of the same reasons that we coin roll hunt. At the forefront, however, is to protect our wealth from the current monetary and fiscal policies that the world is embarking on, which we see as inflationary. Although there is no telling what could happen in the future, we see putting some money into silver as a responsible and positive action to take for ourselves.

In 2013, we had great results in adding to our silver stack. We were aided by the fact that we had set a goal, in September, of purchasing 1 ounce of silver every month for the remainder of the year. The primary reason that we are setting our our coin roll hunting and silver goals for 2014 is based on the success that doing so has provided us in the past. We ended up going over and above the goal and were able to add 24 total ounces of silver during 2013. Although this doesn't seem like a lot, and probably isn't compared to many of those who also stack silver, this was by far our most successful year and we were able to double our silver stack. We are going in the right direction and hope to keep the momentum going in 2014.

We have set a fairly bold (for us) silver goal for the upcoming year. We are going to try to add 100 ounces of silver in 2014. Like our 2014 coin roll hunting goal, we believe that it is both reasonable and realistic. However, it will take a little bit more work and sacrifice on our part to be successful, since it will be more difficult than adding 100 pounds of nickel bullion. That being said, we will have fun along the way and be sure to track the journey on our YouTube channel and on this blog.
